It is based on the Bitcoin protocol but with some key differences, including faster transaction confirmation times and a different hashing algorithm (Scrypt). Litecoin's primary goal is to provide a fast, secure, and low-cost medium of exchange for everyday transactions. Its block generation time is approximately 2.5 minutes, compared to Bitcoin's 10 minutes.
